Spirits will bring Augusta history to life Oct. 24-25

Historic Augusta, Inc.’s annual Walk with the Spirits returns to Westover Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday, October 24 and 25, inviting residents and visitors to discover the people and stories that helped shape Augusta.

Actors in period costumes will bring the “spirits” of Augusta’s past to life, sharing stories that connect audiences with the city’s history and cultural legacy. Through these portrayals, guests will learn about historic places and individuals whose influence continues today, according to a news release from Historic Augusta.

This year’s Walk with the Spirits will be a little different from previous years. Other iterations have featured a lead spirit taking groups to different grave sites where they’d learn about that person’s life. Because Westover is an expansive cemetery, this year’s Walk with the Spirits will be a seated event, with performances beginning at 1:30., 2:30, 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. each day.

Highlighted spirits include Susan Brooks Carr Ware Savage; the Rev. James Harris; George Rowley Lombard, Hollis Chubbuck Boardman; Marguerite “Meta” Charbonnier McGowan Phinizy; Dr. Robert Benjamin Greenblatt, Dorothy “Dottie” Chapman Fuqu and Jessye Norman.

Admission is $20 for adults and $10 for students. Seating is limited for each performance, and reservations and advance purchases are encouraged. Guests should arrive 10 minutes before their scheduled performance to allow for the transition between groups, the news release said.

All proceeds support the projects and programs of Historic Augusta, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving historically or architecturally significant sites and structures in Augusta and Richmond County.
