Augusta Symphony to play ‘Star Wars’ score during showing of film

Augusta Symphony’s upcoming concerts present a first for conductor Dirk Meyer.

“I’ve conducted ‘Star Wars’ music so many times in my career, but I’ve never done the whole movie,” said Meyer.

As the 1977 film is shown on the big screen for two nights at the theater April 24-25, the symphony will play the score In step with the action.

Meyer said he’s excited to be able to bring the original film to the Miller, which served as a movie theater for many years.

“I’m thrilled. I’m a Star Wars’ kid,” he said.

This isn’t the first time the symphony has mixed movie and music magic. They screened “Raiders of the Lost Ark in October 2019.

“We’ve done several of these, but we haven’t done one in the past year or two. They’re a real crowd pleaser,” he said.

Since crowds seem to enjoy the movie and live music, there are two nights to choose from. The performances are at 7:30 p.m. For ticket information, go here.
