A look back at 2024

The story of the year wasn’t exactly good news.

Hurricane Helene arrived on our doorstep bringing her a wake of destruction on Sept. 27.

But after the storm, Augusta Good News ran multiple stories with silver linings – stories of people reaching out to one another, stories of resilience and stories of courage.

Two of the top Helene-related articles at Augusta Good News were about new beginnings. They highlighted weddings – one was for a Peruvian-born bride whose nuptials went on the day after the hurricane hit despite leaving the wedding party scrambling for a venue, and the second was of a Thomson bride who spent the week leading up to her wedding traveling to Atlanta to perform her job is in customer service at Georgia Power.

Stories related to movies and TV shows are always popular at Augusta Good News and this year, readers couldn’t get enough of articles about an Augusta native who has a role in a groundbreaking new soap opera to air on CBS on Feb. 24, 2025, a Thomson teen who wrote his first movie score and a pair of cousins who both have acting careers.

And the Godfather of Soul’s legacy continues. Top stories focused on a February documentary on James Brown and a new musical inspired by Deanna Brown Thomas’s memories.

Rounding out the top stories were announcements about a couple of new businesses. People are excited about the new Wayfair Outlet opening on Jan. 9, 2025, as well as the announcement about a new restaurant – the opening of which has been delayed because of Helene.

Other top stories Augusta Good News covered included Westside’s third consecutive basketball championship and Harlem’s back-to-back state baseball titles.
