Helms College to launch electrical training program in July

Helms College is expanding its School of Trades with the launch of a new Electrical Training Program at its Augusta campus, creating another hands-on career pathway for students while helping meet workforce demand in one of the region’s essential technical fields.

Classes for the new program begin in July, and enrollment is now open. Visit Helms.edu to apply.

The Electrical Training Program is designed to prepare students with foundational skills in electrical theory, wiring, circuitry, installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, blueprint reading, safety practices and electrical codes. Through hands-on classroom and real-world training, students will gain experience with the tools, systems and procedures used by electrical professionals in residential, commercial and industrial environments, according to a news release from Helms College.

“At Helms College, we look closely at where education can meet a real workforce need,” said Kristine Furtaw, Chief Education Officer for Helms College. “The launch of our Electrical Training Program in Augusta is about more than adding a new program. It is about creating a pathway for students to gain practical, career-ready skills while helping employers and communities meet the growing demand for trained electrical professionals.”

Electrician employment in Georgia was projected to grow 17% from 2022 to 2032, with approximately 2,300 projected annual job openings across the state, according to Georgia long-term occupational projections from Projections Central, reported through O*NET OnLine, a career resource sponsored by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration.

The projected openings include both new jobs created through growth and replacement needs as workers transfer occupations or leave the labor force.

“Skilled trades are essential to the strength of our region, and Helms College is proud to help prepare students for work that supports homes, businesses and critical infrastructure across our community,” Furtaw said.

The new program builds on Helms College’s commitment to career education and hands-on training in fields that support local infrastructure, economic growth and long-term career opportunity. Students who complete the program will be prepared to pursue entry-level roles such as electrical technician, electrical installation technician or electrical apprentice.

Electrical professionals play a vital role in keeping homes, schools, hospitals, businesses and communities operating safely. From installing wiring and fixtures to maintaining and troubleshooting electrical systems, the field offers students a practical career path connected to daily life and long-term community needs. Students can complete the program in as little as 12 months.
