Community gardens groundbreaking planned for Allen Homes Feb. 11

Black Farm Street Inc. will host a site prep kickoff and groundbreaking for the Allen Homes Community Garden at 9 a.m. Feb. 11.

The Allen Homes Community Garden, 516 Hines St., is a resident-informed Early Action Activities project implemented through Augusta’s Choice Neighborhood Initiative. Led by Black Farm Street Inc. in partnership with Augusta Locally Grown, the City of Augusta Housing & Community Development Department, and the Greater Augusta Arts Council, the project is designed to expand food access, support youth recreation, and create shared outdoor gathering space for Allen Homes residents, according to a news release.

Planned improvements include raised community garden beds, irrigation, shaded space for education and gatherings, public art, and revitalization of the existing community basketball court. All elements were shaped by resident input during the Choice Neighborhood planning process.

“This project reflects what’s possible when residents lead and partners listen. We’re planting something meaningful here – and we’re committed to seeing it grow.,” said Lashawndra Robinson, executive director of Black Farm Street Inc.

Ahead of construction, project partners will host a neighborhood canvass from 4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 4, engaging residents door-to-door to share information, answer questions and invite participation before on-site work begins.

The Feb. 11 kickoff marks the start of on-site installation and improvements. A community celebration and official project launch, including the unveiling of new murals created in partnership with local artists, is planned for April 2026.

The Choice Neighborhood Initiative is a comprehensive community development program focused on revitalizing distressed housing while improving access to education, health, transportation, and economic opportunity. In Augusta, the initiative centers resident voice and early action projects that strengthen neighborhood infrastructure and long-term community stability.
