Two annual cancer fundraisers see changes due to Helene

Hurricane Helene has prompted changes with two community cancer fundraisers – the Paceline ride and the annual Miracle Mile Walk.

PaceDay, originally scheduled for Oct. 13, has been postponed, according to the Paceline website, and the in-person portion of the Miracle Mile Walk, scheduled for Oct. 19, has been cancelled, according to a news release from the Piedmont Foundation.

Although the actual walk won’t be taking place, the donation drop-off and T-shirt pickup for the Miracle Mile Walk scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 17 at Piedmont Summerville will continue as planned. Raffle tickets will still be available for online purchase until Oct. 20 at 11:59 p.m., with the drawing to occur and winners announced on social media on Oct. 21. Miracle Mile Walk T-shirts and other merchandise remain available for sale at Piedmont Augusta, Piedmont Summerville and Piedmont McDuffie campuses until sold out, the release said.

“Most importantly, we emphasize the why behind this critical fundraiser in its 24th year: 100% of the proceeds from The Miracle Mile Walk stay in this community to ensure that every woman has access to life-saving breast health screenings regardless of their ability to pay. Since 2021, Piedmont Augusta’s Randy W. Cooper M.D. Center for Breast Health Services has performed over 85,000 exams or procedures, and 1,902 have been diagnosed with cancer. The Mobile Mammography Unit, which travels across Piedmont Augusta’s 25-county service area, has performed more than 83,180 mammograms and helped detect almost 400 cases of breast cancer,” the release said.

As for PaceDay, no makeup date has been announced.

“The safety and well-being of our community, including our riders, volunteers, and event staff, are our top priorities in all decision-making processes related to our event,” according to the Paceline website.

Paceline, an annual bike ride, has raised more than $1.5 million for cancer research since 2019 at the Georgia Cancer Center.
