The first of two Augusta Symphony family concerts this season will be Sunday, Oct. 27.
“These are designed specifically for kids. It’s an hour-long performance with lots of talking introducing the pieces. There are shorter pieces, and we encourage kids to dress up and come in costume,” said Dirk Meyer, the Augusta Symphony’s conductor and music director.
The pieces of music typically include ones the audience will be familiar with such as a song from a Disney film as well as works by a composer such as Beethoven or Mozart.
Selections are “really descriptive musical pieces that evoke certain feelings. They are perfect for these types of family concerts,” he said.
Meyer said they try to make the events fun for children because it’s often their first experience seeing a live orchestra.
The concert will be at 4 p.m. at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Center In Columbia County.
The second in the series is the “Holiday Spectacular” show scheduled for Dec. 8. It was originally going to be performed at the Hardin Center, but according to an Oct. 25 email, it will be performed at the Miller Theater instead.
