April is National Poetry Month.
Poet and performing artist Tarika Holland is joining forces with the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History for an open mic night April 24.
“Whether you are a poet, spoken word artist, or musician, there’s a spot waiting for you on the open mic list. If you are a lover of the arts, there’s a seat in the audience waiting for you,” according to an email from Holland.
Holland, who started her poetry journey at 16 years old as a member of the poetry club at John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School and has performed at a variety of open mics in the area, said she knows the importance of artists having a safe place to share their art and develop their skills onstage.

As the poetry scene has taken a shift the past few years, Holland said she decided to step out on her own for the first time as well as take initiative on ensuring that poetry is alive and well here in Augusta. She aspires to curate a quarter show year round as well as to become Augusta Georgia’s Poet Laureate.
