May 6 groundbreaking planned for Augusta Canal village and pedestrian bridge

A May 6 groundbreaking ceremony will mark the start of construction for the Village at Riverwatch Trailhead and Pedestrian Bridge.

This transformative project represents a major investment in Augusta’s future—strengthening connectivity, expanding access to outdoor recreation, and creating new opportunities for residents and visitors to engage with one of the community’s most valued natural assets, according to a news release.

The groundbreaking ceremony will at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the site of the future access road located between Bass Pro Shops and Topgolf. Community leaders, project partners and members of the
public are invited to attend.

“The Augusta Canal has long been a place where our community comes together, and this project builds on that legacy,” said Russ Gambill, Interim Executive Director of the Augusta Canal Authority. “By improving access and adding new amenities, we’re creating a space that welcomes everyone—families, outdoor enthusiasts, and visitors alike—to experience the canal in new and exciting ways.”

Once complete, the Riverwatch Village Trailhead and Pedestrian Bridge will provide safe, scenic, and ADA-
compliant access across the Augusta Canal. The project is designed to promote active lifestyles while creating a welcoming and vibrant public space, the release said.

Key features will include a kayak launch, designated fishing areas along the bridge and enhanced connectivity to shopping and dining destinations within Riverwatch Village.

“This project is another example of how we are investing in Augusta’s future while enhancing quality of life for our residents,” said Mayor Garnett L. Johnson. “By expanding access to the canal and connecting it to surrounding amenities, we are creating new opportunities for recreation, economic activity, and community engagement.”
