Events planned to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Several area events are planned to commemorate the 2025 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Here are a few.

On Friday, Augusta Technical College, Augusta University, and Paine College will join to ”celebrate unity, hope, and the powerful vision of Dr. King” at noon at the Maxwell Theatre at Augusta University, according to a news release.

With a theme of “Cultivating King’s Beloved Community,” the Rev. Dr. Charles E. Goodman Jr., pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church, will give the keynote address. There will be performances by Creative Impressions, Jessye Norman School of the Arts and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. 

The Rev. Rex Wright of Oakey Grove Baptist Church will be the featured speaker for the city of Grovetown’s MLK Day observance, scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Liberty Park.

Hosted by Grovetown Leisure and Recreation, there will be music, entertainment, refreshments and guest speakers honoring King’s legacy.

Also Monday, The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History will present MLK Jr. Holiday Observance Tours will be at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

The events will mark the “life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., his connection to Augusta and the rich history of civil rights in Augusta,” according to the Laney museum Facebook page. The University of South Carolina Aiken and Aiken Technical College will present an MLK Community Celebration on Jan. 26 at the USCA Convocation Center.

A community resource fair will begin at 2:30 p.m. and the celebration begins at 3 p.m. 

Christale Spain, USC Aiken alumnus and chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party, will be the guest speaker, according to the USCA website.

“Each year, the University of South Carolina Aiken and Aiken Technical College team up to commemorate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The tenets of Dr. King’s work continue to be a part of the foundation of the values and mission of both institutions,” the website said.

Due to threat of inclement weather, the Augusta-Richmond County Branch of the NAACP and the City of Augusta’s Martin Luther King Jr. Parade originally scheduled for Jan. 18 in downtown Augusta has been rescheduled for Feb. 1. The parade will begin at 1 p.m. and start at the Dyess Park Community Center.
