NORTH AUGUSTA – Cooper McMurray brought home the first two and last two runs of the game, bookending a strong day for the Augusta GreenJackets (31-25, 66-56) with four RBIs as the Jackets knocked off the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (19-37, 46-74) 8-4 Aug. 27.
After the Jackets entered the bottom of the first down by a run, McMurray snatched the lead away from the Pelicans with his 11th home run of the year. The two-out, two-strike blast continued a trend of McMurray showing power the other direction, as he blasted a fastball from Kevin Camacho over the left field wall for a 2-1 advantage.
Both offenses cooled off after the first, as Augusta’s Landon Beidelschies fired one of his best outings at home this year. Beidelschies worked into the 6th inning for the second time this season, and for his efforts, picked up his first win since late May to cap the home portion of his debut campaign.
The Jackets created some breathing room in the bottom of the 5th, scoring three runs against reliever Christopher Aranguren in his Single-A debut. An RBI single from Manuel Campos, run-scoring double play, and wild pitch pushed the Jackets to their biggest lead of the night as soon as Camacho departed.
Myrtle’s best response came in the sixth, as they chased Beidelschies and cut into the deficit against the bullpen. Beidelschies issued a walk and single to end his day, and reliever Logan Forsythe was rudely greeted by Caden Sorrell, who hammered a three-run homer to right field to pull the Pelicans within a run. Myrtle Beach put the tying run on first in the inning, but Forsythe induced a rally-killing double play to escape the threat.
The Jackets rebounded late in the game, pulling further ahead to make the final few frames painless. Parker Brosius got one run back on the first pitch of the next half inning, torching a solo homer off the façade behind left field, before McMurray poked a two-run single in the eighth to hand the GreenJackets more than enough for a win.
With tonight’s win, the GreenJackets have guaranteed a winning record for the second straight season. Augusta sits ten games above .500 with nine games to play, and can now turn its attention to winning the final home series this weekend. On Friday night, Ole Miss product Wil Libbert makes his pro debut on the mound, becoming the first pitcher drafted by the Braves this summer to debut.
