Scholarship honoring Godfather of Soul launched on his 92nd birthday

To celebrate the James Brown’s 92nd birthday on May 3, his heirs announced the launch of the James Brown’s Don’t Be A Dropout Scholarship Fund as a secondary source of funds for students as Mr. Brown wished.

This new initiative will provide educational opportunities for talented and driven students pursuing post-secondary education, according to a new release from the James Brown Family Foundation.

“Education was always important to our father,” said Dr. Deanna Brown-Thomas, Brown’s daughter and president of The James Brown Family Foundation. “He believed deeply in the power of knowledge, discipline, and self-expression. Through this scholarship, we hope to carry on his commitment to uplifting young people and inspiring the next generation of artists and leaders.”

The James Brown’s Don’t Be A Dropout Scholarship Fund will be administered annually and will support students from underrepresented communities who demonstrate academic promise, artistic potential, and a dedication to community service. The first round of applications will open on May 3, 2025.

Known globally for his unmatched musical talent and energetic performances, Brown also quietly supported causes close to his heart, including education, youth mentorship, and social justice. The scholarship fund aims to continue that lesser-known aspect of his legacy, ensuring that his commitment to empowerment lives on. The foundation currently issues scholarships for one of its original music programs – J.A.M.P (James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils), the release continued.

“We are not just preserving his music—we are preserving his mission,” said Dr. Yamma Brown, one of Brown’s daughters and vice president of the James Brown Family Foundation. “This is about more than honoring the past; it’s about investing in the future.”
