Wycliffe Gordon and Friends will present the ‘Ballad for Lena Mae’ on May 28

Wycliffe Gordon and Friends will present a benefit concert May 28 at Augusta University’s Maxwell Theatre.

“I’m on the road right now, but next week I’m back in Augusta and will present ‘Wycliffe Gordon and Friends’ in a concert to raise money and awareness for all of those touched by cancer,” wrote the award-winning trombonist on Facebook May 21.

The “Ballad for Lena Mae” concert will feature Augusta University “students, alumni and community greats in all areas — jazz, classical and gospel music,” he wrote.

Gordon is the director of jazz studies at Augusta University and has played with the Wynton Marsalis Septet and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and has been named the Jazz Journalist Association’s Trombonist of the Year multiple times.

He’s brought together his musician friends to play in this format numerous times over the years including at New York’s Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and at Augusta University.

“Attendees will have the opportunity to assist in supporting research through the giving of donations to the Georgia Cancer Center,” according to the Augusta University website.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 for general admission, $7 for AU alumni, adults 60 and older, active duty and retired military; and free for AU students, faculty and staff as well as children 17 and younger and college students with a valid ID.
