Veterans received a star-spangled “thank you” Wednesday, Sept. 3, at the VA Augusta’s uptown campus.
Members of the Knights of Columbus presented handmade quilts from the Quilts of Valor program to veterans who are part of the VA Augusta Health Care System Blind Rehabilitation program.
“It’s an absolute honor, just for the Knights of Columbus to come out and present us these quilts, for them to recognize our sacrifice. That really means a lot to me,” said Dexter Durrante, a blind veteran who served in the Army from 1989 to 2009, and is a VA Augusta Blind Rehab specialist.

The handmade quilts are given in recognition of the sacrifice and service to those service members or veterans who, according to the Quilts of Valor Foundation, have been “touched by war.”
“We’re excited to partner with the Knights of Columbus, the Blind Veterans of America, and the Quilts of Valor Foundation in honoring the Veterans in our program,” said Yolanda Burris, VA Augusta Blind Rehabilitation Specialist. “These moments of recognition go a long way in encouraging our veterans and those who love and support them.”
