No one knows exactly what year it started, but for more than 20 years, people have taken up their crosses and walked on Good Friday in south Augusta.

Despite the threat of rain, walkers brought their crosses once again on April 7 to uphold the tradition and were met with clear skies.

The walk is about 1.5 miles beginning with prayer at Burns United Methodist Church traversing down Lumpkin Road to Ascension Lutheran Church on Wells Road across Deans Bridge Road to Hillcrest Baptist Church and ending at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

At each stop, participants sang and heard scriptures.

Christians from different denominations took part, and it’s grown from outside the south Augusta community to bring in others from different towns.

Even in the pandemic, walkers made their journey. One year, they wore masks and practiced social distancing but continued their practice.
