News You Can Use: I-20 reopens 36 hours after bridge struck in Aiken County

Just 36 hours after the initial impact to the overpass, SCDOT has reopened traffic on I-20 in both directions at mile marker 13 in Aiken County.

“I want to thank our crews, our contractors and our partners in law enforcement for working around the clock on this major emergency response effort. Thanks to their immediate mobilization and diligent work, we opened the interstate in a record amount of time,” Justin Powell, South Carolina Secretary of Transportation, said in a news release

The bridge on Old Vaucluse Road was a total loss following a bridge strike and fire and now SCDOT will begin expediting a bridge replacement plan. In the meantime, the interstate is fully reopened and traffic is moving.

Drivers in the area should continue to travel with caution as crews will continue to work to remove traffic control devices along the detour routes.
