News You Can Use: I-20 closure update June 15

(Editor’s note: I-20 was reopened about 36 hours after the accident. Read more here.)

Work continues on the I-20 closure in Aiken County. Overnight, contractors successfully demolished and removed the bridge structure damaged in Saturday’s tanker crash and fire.

The structure was removed less than 24 hours after the crash occurred, according to a news release from the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

The incident occurred around 4 a.m. June 14 when a gasoline tanker containing 8,500 gallons of gasoline hit the structure near mile marker 13 and burst into flames.

With the roadway cleared, crews have begun milling and are now beginning work to repave the damaged sections of I-20 so that the interstate can be safely reopened.

Drivers should expect delays and seek alternate routes if possible. A detour route is in place and drivers that are traveling through the area should slow down, follow the signed detour route and stay alert for law enforcement and crews working on the roadway, the release continued.

The SCDOT will continue to share updates as crews work to clean up the site and more information becomes available.
