The Augusta Canal will be drained during repairs to a sewage line near the Kroc Center.
The Augusta Utility Department is currently undertaking essential repair work on a sewage line near the Kroc Center, resulting in the temporary drainage and closure of the Augusta Canal’s waterway from the Lake Olmstead Bulkhead to 13th Street for the next several weeks, according to a news release from the Augusta Canal Authority.
“This necessary maintenance project is being carried out to address infrastructure concerns and ensure the continued safety, health, and enjoyment of our community’s beloved waterway,” the release said.
A large sinkhole revealed the need for prompt intervention to prevent potential environmental hazards and service disruptions. The repair effort will entail deep excavation in a very wet environment, the release continued.
With the canal’s water levels lowered to facilitate access for utility crews and heavy machinery, all boat tours will be suspended during repairs.
“We understand the disappointment this may bring to our visitors and residents who look forward to experiencing the canal by water, but these measures are vital to ensure the long-term stability and safety of our infrastructure,” the release said.

All scheduled boat tours are cancelled until further notice. Guests who have pre-booked tours are encouraged to contact the Augusta Canal Discovery Center for information on rescheduling or refunds.
In addition, the canal from the Lake Olmstead Bulkhead gates to 13th Street will be inaccessible to recreational boaters and kayakers during repairs.
The Augusta Canal Discovery Center will remain open to the public, offering interactive exhibits, historical displays, and educational resources about the Augusta Canal’s legacy.
The canal-side trail system, stretching from the Pumping Station to Downtown Augusta will remain open for walking, running and cycling. Portions of the trail between Eve Street and Broad are adjacent to the ongoing utility work.
The new release did not provide a concrete timeline for repairs to be completed – only that “the repair work is anticipated to last for several weeks. Weather conditions, supply chain factors and unforeseen technical challenges could affect this,” the release said.
