Never forget: Columbia County commemorates the 24th anniversary of 9/11

Columbia County Fire Rescue held its annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb and Remembrance Ceremony Thursday, Sept. 11, at The Plaza parking deck next to the Columbia County Performing Arts Center.

The brief ceremony included a timeline of events on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001 when two planes crashed into New York’s Twin Towers, one crashed in Pennsylvania and one hit the Pentagon, a last call, ringing of the bell and closing prayer.

After the ceremony, firefighters donned their gear and climbed stairs to commemorate the 110 flights of stairs that were in the World Trade Center. The attacks killed 2,977 people including 343 New York firefighters died in their efforts to save people on 9/11.
