Misfit Theatre Group is ready for ‘spooky season’

October may still be several weeks away, but area horror enthusiasts are ready to sink their teeth into the fall.

“This is a good start to spooky season,” said Jezibell Anat, who wrote the script and plays one of Dracula’s brides in a Misfit Theatre Group’s version of “Dracula,” which will be staged at 9 p.m. Aug. 9-10 at Pexcho’s American Dime Museum, 216 Sixth St.

The production is based on the classic vampire novel, but it offers a few twists including music by Cathy Benedetto. This production also has more of an Eastern European flavor given that its titular character is from Romania.

The show opens Misfit’s 21st season.

Over the past two decades, Robert Seawell IV and the group’s members have put on a variety of shows including an annual Rocky Horror Picture Show production that started out as a shadow cast play and has grown over time.

Other shows such as a tribute to “Sweeney Todd” and “Repo the Genetic Opera” featured Splattervision which those who grew up with the comedian Gallagher can understand.

Anat said while gore is part of this show, it’s not in Splattervision, so the hopes are that audience members will come dressed as their favorite Dracula character because they won’t have to be concerned about special effects damaging their clothing.

The dime museum has undergone some renovations over the past few years and the theater has been relocated to provide additional seating. She said the space with its unique niche works really well with the play’s horror theme.

The play begins at 9 p.m. because it contains themes such as an LGBTQ plot line suited for a more mature audience.

Tickets are $25 for general admission and $30 for VIPs.
