Military appreciation and record attendance events planned for Augusta University basketball

A couple of special events are tied to upcoming Augusta University basketball games.

The annual Military Appreciation Day games on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Christenberry Fieldhouse pits the Jags against Peach Belt Conference foe Georgia College. The women’s game begins at noon with the men following at 2 p.m., according to a news release from Augusta University.

More than 400 active-duty Fort Gordon servicemembers plan to attend. During halftime of the men’s game, ROTC cadets will officially be inducted into different military branches with a special swearing-in ceremony, the release said.

All active duty, retired and veteran military personnel receive free admission with a valid military ID or DD214 form. Tickets are $10 for general admission; $7 for non-AU students and senior citizens; and free for AU students, faculty, staff and retirees with valid IDs as well as for children 6 years old and younger.

On Feb. 11, the men’s basketball team hopes to shatter attendance records as the Jaguars take on Young Harris at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m. The women’s game is scheduled for 1:30.

“Our goal is simply to break the attendance record on Feb. 11 versus Young Harris for Christenberry Fieldhouse,” men’s head coach Dip Metress said. “Admission will be free for everyone, and we are excited about providing this entertainment for the city of Augusta, our university and our team. Come join us and let’s get behind the Jags as we defend our Peach Belt Conference Championship.”

The university pep band will perform, and the first 100 students will receive free T-shirts. Food vendors, concessions, prizes and giveaways will be part of the event.
