Beau Polcha likes to hit and run, and last week against Windsor Academy, the Augusta Prep junior got to do both of those, scoring a school record six touchdowns in the 49-22 victory.
“I got some of the best blocks I’ve ever seen. Three times I scored I didn’t even get touched. All I had to do was run as fast as I could and make one cut,” said Polcha who rushed for a total of 286 yards on Aug. 30.
Polcha thanked his teammates for opening up those holes for him by bringing Krispy Kreme doughnut.s
“Our offensive line had a great game. They really blocked well up front, and Beau took advantage with some big holes they opened,” said Augusta Prep coach Todd Booker.
Polcha determined over the summer to up his game. He attended some football camps and devoted more time to the gym. He put on 20 pounds and also shaved some time off his mile.
“He has worked very hard to have a great season,” said Booker.
While Polcha’s breakaway runs, which included a 75-yard sprint and two 50 yarders, emphasized his speed, other touchdowns required some finesse as well as utilizing those hitting skills he’s sharpened at linebacker. He also had six tackles on the night.
“The third (touchdown) was the most fun because I ran the dude over and stiff-armed the other guy,” he said. “The 75 yarder was fun. I didn’t get touched on that one. I made one cut and had to run as fast as I could. The last one I scored the kid jumped on my back, and I just threw him.”
Polcha started playing football around the fourth grade. His younger brother, Benjamin, signed up to play, and when Beau Polcha saw the other kids getting their pads and gear, he decided he wanted to play as well.
Football is big in the Polcha household. Polcha said his parents are his biggest cheerleaders, but they keep him honest by pointing out areas he should focus on improving.
Both brothers play linebacker, and defense was a favorite of Polcha’s for a long time. Now, he likes running and scoring touchdowns.
He’s more a fan of professional football than college. Although he likes the University of Georgia, he prefers to watch the Philadelphia Eagles on game day.
Polcha plays multiple sports including baseball, and he plans to run track in the spring. He transferred from Greenbrier his sophomore year. He was a member of the Greenbrier varsity lacrosse team his freshman year.
The Cavaliers are 2-1 so far, and Booker is looking at his players to see what they will do this week against Trinity Christian.
“The name of the game is consistency. The whole team I want to stay consistent. Hopefully, the line will continue to block, and Beau will continue to run,” Booker said.
