Members of Augusta’s Jewish community gathered at the Evans Towne Center Park Dec. 14 to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah with children’s games, songs, a menorah lighting, a gelt drop with the assistance of Columbia County firefighters, prizes, latkes, donuts and a pyrotechnic show.
Hanukkah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods. This year it began at sundown Dec. 14 and ends Dec. 22.
