LINCOLNTON, Ga. – Homes For Our Troops needs volunteers June 21 for a project in Lincolnton.
Volunteers will help landscape Army Capt. Joseph Caley’s future specially adapted custom home, which has more than 40 adaptations including lower countertops and roll under sinks. The event will be at 1018 Cross Creek Way, beginning at 9 a.m. with 8:30 a.m., according to a news release from Homes For Our Troops.
On Sept. 18, 2009, during his first combat deployment to Iraq Caley, then an Infantry platoon leader, was on patrol with the 1-155th Combat Aviation Brigade when an improvised explosive device exploded in Kalsu, Iraq. Caley was moving an injured civilian to safety when a second IED explosion occurred causing severe damage to his left leg and a traumatic brain injury.
Volunteers will lay sod and plant trees and flowers. Volunteers are asked to bring gardening gloves and will receive an Homes for Our Troops T-shirt and lunch.
Caley will receive his home at a ceremony in July.
Homes For Our Troops relies on contributions from donors, supporters, and corporate partners for the building of each Veteran’s home. Currently there are 78 HFOT home-build projects for injured Veterans in various stages of completion nationwide. Community members may hold fundraisers or make donations.
