Greenbrier basketball stays hot with 58-46 win over Grovetown on Jan. 8

Greenbrier boys’ basketball team earned its 11th win of the season after defeating Grovetown 58-46 on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

The Wolfpack only won 12 games during the entire season last year, but now have one of their best starts to a season in recent years with an 11-5 record.

“I feel like we executed the gameplan and played hard,” said Greenbrier Coach Demetrius Howard. “We played hard from the tip to the final buzzer – that’s our motto. We did a really good job on the defensive end and did a good job containing them and limiting them to one shot.“

Greenbrier senior guard Jackson Farlow began the game 3-for-3, scoring seven points early. Grovetown junior Amare Pryce converted three 3-pointers, pushing the Patriots ahead 9-6. Martez Ford matched Pryce with two 3-pointers of his own, helping Greenbrier to a tie game at 15 all through one quarter.

Jamari Papillon converted three 3-pointers in the second quarter to push the Wolfpack ahead 26-22 at the half.

“He came in and knocked down three threes in a timely manner when we needed it,” said Howard.

The Wolfpack continued their momentum by beginning the third quarter on a 7-0 run. Hamilton Craik led Greenbrier with eight points off the bench in the third quarter and Greenbrier led 41-31 to start the fourth quarter.

A three by Ford and Farlow, followed by a six-point final quarter from forward Nathan Garstang, led Greenbrier to the win.

“Farlow and Ford are two of our best shooters, so that is the expectation for them to step up and make big shots,” Howard said. “It was good for the confidence and momentum of the team. It stuff we work on everyday and guys when they get in, they are expected to make open shots.”

Grovetown is coming off two tight losses, one against undefeated North Augusta and another versus 11-5 Rockdale County. This now marks the Patriots third straight loss.

Greenbrier will travel to play Effingham County 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10 and Grovetown’s next game will be at Newton on Tuesday, Jan 14 at 7:30 p.m.
