Festivals abound the first weekend of October

Fall festival season is in full swing the first weekend in October with multiple events highlighting different cultures.

Here’s a sampling of them.

The fall Greek festival features four days of gyros, souvlaki, baklava and feta fries at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 953 Telfair St. Check out the full menu here.

The festival will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. There will be vendors and entertainment.

For those who don’t want to miss the college football action on Saturday, they can watch games from inside the taverna.

The annual Atomic City Festival kicks off in New Ellenton, S.C. Friday from 6 to 9 p.m., followed by a full day of events Saturday from 10 a.m. go to 9:30 p.m.

The fun includes a concert with Elvis tribute artist Jason Sikes, train rides, a petting zoo, a car show and fireworks to top it off.

Also Saturday is the 34th annual Oliver Hardy Festival in Harlem, where the comedian was born.

 Vendors will line the streets of downtown Harlem during the event scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The festival features a parade, entertainment and tributes to the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy. Returning this year is the Oliver Hardy costume contest.

For a taste of Germany head to Aiken’s downtown for the 10th annual Aiken Oktoberfest from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Guests are encouraged to come out in German attire and enjoy German beer and food as well as live music. College football games will be broadcast on the big screen.

And in downtown Augusta from noon to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Augusta Common is Latin Fiesta.

Vendors, food, live music, a kid’s zone and dance are all scheduled during the free event.
