Comcast celebrates McDuffie County broadband expansion with block party, Lift Zone opening and student laptop giveaway

THOMSON – Comcast has completed its broadband expansion project in McDuffie County and celebrated with residents on Aug. 6.

Comcast hosted events that included a surprise laptop giveaway, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a community block party with 47 dual enrollment junior and senior Thomson High School students receiving free laptops to  help ensure more young people in McDuffie County have the digital tools they need to succeed in school and beyond, according to a news release from Comcast.

“Reliable Internet access is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity for families, businesses and communities to grow,” said McDuffie County Board of Commissioners Chairman Chase Beggs. “Comcast’s expansion strengthens our infrastructure, supports economic development and gives our residents the tools they need to compete and connect in today’s world.”

The laptop giveaway is part of Project UP, the company’s $1 billion commitment to create digital opportunity through programs and community partnerships that connect people to the Internet, advance economic mobility and open doors for the next generation of innovators, entrepreneurs, storytellers and creators.

“Access to technology is essential for student success, both in and out of the classroom,” said Mychele Rhodes, McDuffie County School Superintendent. “We’re grateful to Comcast for helping close the digital gap for so many of our students through this laptop giveaway and continued support of our community. This investment will have a lasting impact on learning and opportunity in McDuffie County.”

Comcast also officially activated the Lift Zone at the McDuffie County Boys & Girls Club – reaffirming its commitment to supporting students and families with free, high-speed WiFi and digital resources, the news release continued. While the Club has previously served as a Lift Zone, this relaunch marks a renewed focus on digital access and impact. To support the initiative, Comcast donated a $10,000 grant to the Club to enhance technology resources and programming within the space.

The celebration wrapped up with a community block party at the Club, featuring a DJ, face painting, a 360-photo booth, and a food truck. Attendees had the opportunity to connect with Xfinity and Internet Essentials representatives to learn more about the new services.

“Our work in McDuffie County is about more than building our network – it’s about building up communities,” said Mike McArdle, Comcast Regional Senior Vice President. “By expanding access to high-speed Internet, we’re investing in the future of this County. We’re proud to partner with local leaders and organizations who share our commitment to helping every resident thrive.”
