Charleston improv veteran to bring signature show to Augusta

Charleston improv veteran and Theatre 99 co-founder Greg Tavares brings a special night of long-form improvisation featuring performers from both Charleston and Augusta on Oct. 16.

Tavares’ signature narrative improv show, “Likely Story” will come to Le Chat Noir Theatre at 8 p.m., Oct. 16, according to a news release.

The evening unfolds in three acts, each showcasing a different side of long-form improv.

The night begins with a performance by local Augusta improvisers fresh from an intensive long-form improv class with Tavares, putting their new skills to work in front of a live audience.

For the second act, Tavares and Andy Adkins take the stage for Likely Story, a completely improvised narrative show. With no script and no predetermined plot, the two performers create characters, relationships, and stories on the spot, weaving seemingly unrelated moments together into a single unfolding narrative, the news release continued.

The evening culminates with Tavares and Andy joining local improv veterans for a freewheeling final jam where anything can happen.

Tavares is the co-founder of Theatre 99, Charleston’s home for improv comedy for more than 25 years. He has performed in more than 4,000 improv shows and taught thousands of students, bringing decades of experience in long-form improvisation to both the classroom and the stage.

Improv is a regular occurrence at Le Chat Noir with its regular eXtreme Theater Games by Schrodinger’s Cat every first Friday with two shows at 8 and 10 p.m.

Tavares will also bring an improvisation workshop to Le Chat Noir on Oct. 15.

In the three hour workshop, Tavares will break long form down into simple, playable skills and show you how to connect scenes, follow ideas, build characters and relationships, and turn a series of improvised scenes into a show audiences will love, according to a Facebook post.
