Brentwood routs Augusta Prep 49-0 behind high-octane offense

Brentwood exploded for 42 first-half points en route to a 49-0 victory over Augusta Prep on Friday night, Oct. 18, at Richards Stadium.

Thirty-five of those points came in the first quarter to put the game out of reach early as the host Cavaliers played their first game since Sept. 14 due to Hurricane Helene.

The War Eagles (3-0, 7-1) started the scoring on the game’s first play from scrimmage after the Cavaliers had fumbled the opening kickoff. Quarterback Baylor Cobb found Tristan Robinson for a 28-yard touchdown, and Brayden Tyson added the extra point for a 7-0 Eagle lead with only 12 seconds gone.

After a Prep punt, Cobb found tight end Riley Helton for a touchdown in the back of the end zone on a third-and-goal play from the 12-yard line. Tyson added the PAT for 14-0.

Another Cav fumble on a kickoff return set up the next Brentwood score. Zach Denton raced 44 yards for the next touchdown, and again Tyson’s PAT made it 21-0 with 7:10 left in the first.

Then, on the Eagles’ next possession, Jones Sheppard raced 54 yards for another TD, with Tyson’s extra point making it 28-0. Then Cobb hit Quez Collins on a 34-yard scoring pass, and Tyson added his fifth PAT for 35.0 with 2:27 left in the quarter.

The visitors made it 42-0 on a 65-yard touchdown run by Collins as he outraced the entire Prep secondary on the lightning play.

The Cavs did have a nice drive to end the first half, but backup quarterback Eli McFadgen, who drove his team down the field, was stopped on a fourth-and-goal play from the 4-yard line on the half’s final play.

Abe Williams carried the ball twice to open the second half for Brentwood, scoring on a 12-yard run for a two-play, 65-yard drive that brought the score to 49-0 after another Tyson PAT kick.

Prep (2-4) was playing without standout tight end Conar Harris, who is in the concussion protocol. Quarterback Chavous Carter went down in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.

“Conar went down with an injury our last game. He’s been out, hopefully he’s going to be able to come. And Carter, his shoulder, I think it popped out it’s going to be sore,” said Coach Todd Booker of Augusta Prep.

Booker feels optimistic that both Harris and Carter will make speedy recoveries back onto the field.

Additionally, the Cavaliers continue to recover from Hurricane Helene with a lack of preparedness.

“We’re happy to be back on the field, to have some kind of normalcy, but there’s some things we gotta work on,” said Booker.

McFadgen finished with 94 yards on 12 carries for the Cavaliers.

The visiting War Eagles outgained the Cavs 370-158.

Prep will play at Thomas Jefferson next Friday night, while Brentwood will host Gatewood.
