‘Behold the Star’ returns Dec. 16

Creative Impressions will present its annual holiday production of Behold the Star Dec. 16.

COVID impacted the musical group’s membership, and the youth singing ensemble is finally getting its numbers back up, according to Shanita Newton, the group’s president.

“The past few years we’ve relied on the alumni for their vocal support,” she said. “But the students are doing a great job.”

There are 46 students between the age of 10 and 18 involved in Creative Impressions,

The annual event features a variety of Christmas music in multiple styles. Not only do the young performers sing, but there’s choreography as well.

“There are traditional carols, gospel,” she said.

Trey McLaughlin, who wears multiple hats including songwriter, arranger and worship leader, conducts the group.

“Trey is doing a beautiful job,” she said.

Behold the Star will begin at 7 p.m. at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre at Augusta University.

Tickets are $25 and are available online here or at the door.

Started in 1996, Creative Impressions has empowered more than 900 youth through “quality choral, cultural and civic experiences” according to its website. “Through weekly sessions, members receive instruction in music theory, sight-singing, performance technique and other fundamentals in the music discipline, while providing small-group mentorship. By participating, members discover their ability to impact their lives and enrich their artistic communities; they also build meaningful relationships and accountability amongst their peers, develop positive self-images, and learn respect for others.’’
