Augusta University to retire Siler’s jersey on Dec. 5

Only one Augusta University basketball player has ever made to the NBA, and on Thursday, his number will be retired.

Garret Siler was on the team from 2005-2009 and played a large role in the team advancing to not only the NCAA tournament but to the NCAA title game in 2008, according to a news release from Augusta University.

At halftime of the basketball game against Paine College at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, Augusta University will retire his jersey – No. 21.

Siler amassed 1,599 points, which is 10th on the all-time scoring list for Augusta and grabbed 797 rebounds, which is also 10th on the all-time list.

Siler’s seven-foot frame made him one of the most imposing figures in Peach Belt Conference basketball history and amassed 250 blocked shots during his career as well as countless number of shots that were altered with his presence on the inside.

In addition to wearing 21, he played 21 games for the Phoenix Suns in the 2010-2011 season. He also went on to play several years of pro ball around the world.

Siler has returned to Augusta University this year and is a volunteer student assistant coach.
