Augusta Special Olympian wins silver in Berlin games

Special Olympics Team USA delegates from Georgia, Raven Allen of Augusta and Caleb Guy of Atlanta won a silver medal June 22 in the 200 Meter Tandem Kayaking Event at the World Games in Berlin.

Allen has competed in Special Olympics for 16 years in bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian and volleyball. Allen, who is employed at Augusta Development Specialists, is one of the first members of her family to travel to another country as she competes in the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, according to her biography at the Special Olympics USA website.

Allen prepared for the World Games by going to the gym regularly and practicing on the water, the website continued.

More than 7,000 Special Olympians from 190 countries have been participating in 26 sports at the World Games, which began June 17. They end Sunday, June 25.

More than 3,000 coaches and 20,000 volunteers attend the games in support of the athletes.
