Augusta Lynx name is fan favorite

Hockey is back in Augusta and so are the Augusta Lynx.

The announcement came via a promotional video to a packed house at the Augusta Convention Center Tuesday night.

“Out of all the 3 to 4,000 that submitted and shared their goal, it was overwhelming how much you guys wanted the Augusta Lynx,” said Tim Tebow, one of the team’s owners. “Now you have the Augusta Lynx coming in October 2027.”

Some diehard hockey fans wore their original Augusta Lynx jerseys and T shirts to the event and stood to cheer when the name was dropped. The original team played in Augusta from 1998-2008.

The team will be part of the East Coast Hockey League, AA development league. The Lynx are the 32nd team in the league which will create a one-to-one pipeline for NHL teams. Sixteen players ended up in the NHL after their Augusta Lynx days.

Tebow said he sees more than a sports team coming to the area.

“I hope the relationships with families in the community and individuals will be different because of this game, not because the game has this power but fellowship does, community does, goals do,” he said.

The team will play in the new Augusta arena which is currently under construction.
