ArtScape: Spooky art, puppets and an online auction

A spooky art show and an online art auction are a couple of things happening in Augusta’s arts community this week.

Heather Rene Dunaway organized her first group art show – Spooktacular October – in 2017 for a couple of reasons.

“I’ve learned that shows like these bring folks with similar interests together in one place to celebrate. It gives artists the opportunity to showcase their talent, while giving them a centralized theme to break through any artists block (something that plagues me personally) and create something they otherwise might not have,” she wrote in a message.

A lover of Halloween and “all things spooky,” Dunaway thought the October event seemed like a fun one, and it’s appealed to a lot of people.

“It also gives patrons a chance to see some of their favorite artist’s creations around some of their favorite themes. It’s a win-win. This being the 8th Spooktacular I’ve done, it’s been amazing to see it grow. Last year we had about 160 guests show up to the reception and sold a good deal of the artwork,” she said.

Artists include Aaron Bailey, Emily Bender, Ashley Beresch, Yana Bondar, Boper9, Kalan Bowman, Ivy Brown, Theron Cartwright, Jeremy Cohen, Heather René Dunaway (curator), Foxphire, Laverne Goth, Tripp Gustin, Shelby Hardin, Kelley Igo, Crystal Junod Swimm, Francie Klopotic, Hannah Lawler, Zaira Marrero, Sara Mays, TJ McSherry, Erica Pastecki, RUCU, Morgan Smith, Morgan Spence, Subject Dolly, Sam Taylor, Mallory Vinson and Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman.

This year’s reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 at Le Chat Noir. Artwork will remain on display through Nov. 8.

Le Chat Noir has a couple of events scheduled so patrons can view art when they attend the Frogtown Mountain Puppeteers’ comedic performances of “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow.” Shows, suitable for ages 4 and older, will be at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 19. Tickets are available here.

Also, the 17th annual Black Cat Carnival will be 8 p.m., Oct. 26 at Le Chat Noir. Go here for more information.

4P Studios has started an online auction for area artists.

The sale opened on Oct. 8 and will run through Oct. 31 with 100% of the money raised going to local artists. Participating artists include Christina Rice, Francie Klopotic, Dan Dyches, Syd Padgett and Anna Thompson.

Every other Tuesday, 4P Studios hosts a pop-up art event at Metro Coffeehouse on 1054 Broad St.

The next event is scheduled from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 with artists Rich Klein, Brian Berry and 4P Studio Pottery Crew.
