Area Special Olympian wins silver at national tennis event

Doyle Campbell won a silver medal at the Special Olympics North American Tennis competition Oct. 17 at Hilton Head, S.C.

Campbell, who is part of the Augusta Stars, competed in Level 6, which is the highest skill level in Special Olympics tennis, according to a news release from the Augusta Stars.

On Oct.17, he played two tennis matches consisting of six sets each. At this level, competition is smaller in number, and Campbell played an athlete from North Carolina and Illinois.

This was Campbell’s first year competing in this event and his coach, Vernon Broome, was approached about Campbell attending other tournaments in the future. Campbell and Broome were selected to lead the group in the Athletes’ and Coaches’ oath.
