American Revolution monument to be dedicated in Edgefield Aug. 2

A dedication ceremony for Edgefield’s new monument for the American Revolution will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Edgefield Courthouse Square.

Steven J. Rauch, who has served as Command Historian for the U.S. Army Signal Center at Fort Gordon, will be the keynote speaker. Rauch has done extensive research on the American Revolution in Augusta and surrounding areas, according to a news release.

Copies of “The Story of the American Revolution in Edgefield County” detailing and documenting the activities of Edgefield County residents in winning the United States’ Independence will be available for purchase.

Revolutionary-era reenactors and a color guard will take part in the ceremony; a cannon will be fired and a fife and drum corps as well as Edgefield County’s Jane Jenkins Herlong will perform.

All of Edgefield’s museums will be open during the event as well. People can visit the Joanne T. Rainsford Discovery Center, Magnolia Dale House Museum, Horn’s Creek Church Museum, Oakley Park Museum, and the blacksmith and Pottery.

The Edgefield County 250 Committee, which was created to celebrate and promote the role of South Carolina in the American Revolution, is sponsoring the event.
