It’s “set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., and in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States. Here you’ll find a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. At the center of this community are the Duprees, a powerful and prestigious multi-generational family that is the very definition of Black royalty. But behind these pristine walls and lush, manicured gardens are juicy secrets and scandals waiting to be uncovered. And those who live outside these gates are watching closely. These are the places where our characters live, love, work and play. Those who have ‘made it’ and those who haven’t are all trying to navigate life … and some with more grace than others,” the release said.

Johnson’s character is a plastic surgeon who lives in that gated community with his psychiatrist wife played by veteran performer Daphnee Duplaix, who has appeared in “One Life to Live.”

Maurice Johnson will portray Dr. Ted Richardson in “Beyond the Gates” to debut on CBS Feb. 24, 2025.

The show is being filmed in Atlanta and stars Tamara Tunie, Clifton Davis, Karla Mosley, Alex Alegria, Lauren Buglioli, Brandon Claybon, Timon Kyle Durrett, Sean Freeman, Ben Gavin, Marquita Goings, Jibre Hordges, Jen Jacob, Trisha Mann-Grant, Mike Manning, RhonniRose Mantilla, Ambyr Michelle, Colby Muhammad and Arielle Prepetit,

This marks the first-ever one-hour Black daytime soap and the first daytime drama to premiere since “Passions” in 1999, the release said.

“This is new and fresh. It’s not in the same cookie-cutter mold of soap operas we’ve come to know. It’s a new era. We’re trendsetters,” said Johnson in the Nov. 3 article.

Johnson has performed numerous roles on the big and small screen. He’s been in television shows such as “Hawaii Five-0,” “Chicago Fire” and has a few new films scheduled for release including a comedy called “Operation: Aunties.” He was in Augusta last year promoting his film, “Jones Plantation.”
