Breastfeeding provides optimal nutrition, supports lifelong health for both infants and mothers, and remains one of the most effective ways to improve health outcomes and promote a strong start in life.
Piedmont Augusta recognizes the importance of breastfeeding for both personal and public health and will be celebrating August as National Breastfeeding Month. World Breastfeeding Week 2026 is from Aug. 1-7.
Breastfeeding rates have increased significantly across the country over the past four decades following many years of research, education and support for breastfeeding mothers. As breastfeeding rates increase in the CSRA, the impact to our area’s quality of life will be enormous and will extend to generations of children who will enjoy better health for a lifetime.
According to the Georgia Department of Public Health (GDPH), breastfeeding is the best source of nutrition for most infants and can lower a baby’s risk of certain health conditions.
However, GDPH says breastfeeding moms need more support at home, in the workplace, and in the community. That’s why World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated every year to highlight the benefits of breastfeeding and the need for community support.
Piedmont Augusta has a dedicated Lactation Department to assist and support moms as they begin their breastfeeding journey. Additionally, Piedmont Augusta provides three designated employee pumping rooms to support employees returning to work following childbirth.
Piedmont Augusta opened the first Breast Milk Lab in Augusta in 2016 to provide breast milk to the tiniest infants in our Special Care Nursery.
Piedmont Augusta is excited to support area families by celebrating World Breastfeeding Week with activities to raise awareness about breastfeeding among patients and staff as well as special gifts for all babies born at Piedmont Augusta during this week.
