‘Robin Hood’ steals director back from Texas

AIKEN — Not even being several states away could keep David Skeen from a directing a show he loved.

After 54 years volunteering with Aiken Community Theatre, Skeen moved to Texas last year.. When one of the plays he submitted to ACT’s selection committee was chosen for the theatre’s 73rd season, however, he knew he had to return to direct it, according to a news release from the theater.

“It’s one of the funniest takes on the Robin Hood tale I have ever read,” Skeen said of Ken Ludwig’s ‘Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood.’ He booked a B&B in Aiken and will spend two months this summer bringing the high-energy comedy to life for two weekends beginning July 10 at Amentum Center for the Performing Arts on Newberry Street.

The show comes with ample sword fights, and Skeen and cast have assembled quite an arsenal.

“We’re using just about every weapon imaginable — swords, bows, arrows, even a frying pan — except firearms, which are out of period,” he said.

Written Ludwig, who is one of the most successful comedic writers working in theatre today, “Sherwood” is a favorite of both professional and community theaters, the news release said. It follows a carefree young man who suddenly confronts injustice he can’t ignore. Forced into hiding in Sherwood Forest, he joins a band of loyal followers — including Little John, Friar Tuck and the bold Maid Marian Fitzwalter, who steals his heart and refuses to give it back.

“’Sherwood’ is a bawdy tale full of action, romance and comedy,” Skeen said. “Like in Shakespeare, there’s some double entendre, but it will likely go over the heads of younger audience members who come for the action and stage combat.”

Skeen believes audiences are in for a lively night.

“I think those who come to see this show will love the action, the story, and the audience-participation moments woven throughout,” he said.

.Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. July 10, 11, 17 and 18 and at 2 p.m. July 12. For tickets, go here or call the box office at 803-648-1438.
