The Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz and Lazy Mayzie are some of the magical Dr. Seuss characters who the audience will meet in Musical Theatre Workshops production of “Seussical Jr.” May 15-17.
“One of the most fun parts for kids is the fantastical characters. Most of them are characters these children know from books they grew up with and even their parents grew up with,” said Devon McSherry, who directs about 100 children between the ages of 5 and 14 in two separate show casts.
In “Seussical Jr.,” the Cat in the Hat leads the audience from the Jungle of Nool into the tiny world of the Whos, where Horton the Elephant discovers a speck of dust containing an entire community and he’s determined to protect them even though no one can see them.
While there’s a wide variety of ages on stage, McSherry said the older children often teach the younger ones. In Whoville, younger and older children are in the Who ensemble.
“They help make sure the kids feel comfortable on stage and guide them where they are supposed to go,” she said of the older actors, some of whom have performed in other shows with Musical Theatre Workshops.
Shows will be at 7 p.m. May 15, 2 and 7 p.m. May 16 and 2 p.m. May 17 at Grovetown High School. For tickets, go here.
