Augusta rowers earn national titles at indoor championships Feb. 7

Augusta Rowing Club’s junior team captain and future Harvard rower Colette Kriegel led the charge at the Atlanta Erg Sprints, one of five events that make up the USRowing Indoor Championships, Feb. 7 at the Georgia Tech Campus Recreation Center.

Kriegel won first place in the Women’s Under-19 2,000-meter race with a time of 7:19.8. Her performance earned gold at the Atlanta Erg Sprints and secured her a national championship title, according to a news release.

Adult athlete Ashley Johnson also made headlines, winning the Open Women’s 2,000-meter race in Atlanta with a record-setting time of 7:02.9. Johnson earned the event’s Hammer Award (record time in her category), finished third nationally in her division and ranked fourth overall among all women competitors nationwide.

“This was a historic day for our program,” said head coach Chris Moore. “Seeing our juniors earn a national title and bring home the team trophy, alongside strong performances from our masters, shows the depth of commitment happening every day at the boathouse.”

The rowing club’s juniors continued to dominate across events, with strong finishes from athletes experienced and novice, contributing to a total of 21 junior medals. The adult program added nine medals, including multiple medal finishes from club president Kirsten Aylward and podium performances from Lynda Lance and Susan Diagana, the news release continued.

The weekend concluded with the Augusta Rowing Club junior team capturing the Junior Team Points Trophy, recognizing consistent top finishes across multiple races.
