Nursing sorority celebrates Founder’s Day

Phi Chi Chapter, Incorporated celebrated Founders Day of the Chi Eta Phi Nursing Sorority, Incorporated on Oct. 16, 2025, along with the more than 8,000 members in 142 chapters in the United States and the Virgin Islands.

The ceremony honored the 13 nurses who formed the sorority after they were denied membership to a similar group due to their race. The sorority those women founded has grown both in membership numbers and in the mission of serving others.

Also honored were the first leaders of Phi Chi, which was organized on May 21, 1977, as well as the three charter members who were in attendance — Mildred Watson, Margaret Beard and Patsy Scott.

Shandra Drayton-Bryant was recognized as Spotlight of the Quarter and Gwendolyn Taylor as Soror of the Year for 2025.

“I am honored and grateful to be recognized with the Spotlight Award for Fall 2025. Receiving this award means a great deal to me, and I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to all my sorority sisters in the Phi Chi, Augusta Chapter where I have been a member since November 2015 and have found consolation inproviding service in so many avenues and sisterly friendships since being a member,” said Shandra Drayton-Bryant, in the news release..

A candle was lit in remembrance of the group’s deceased members and members thanked God for keeping this chapter strong and for the ability to do His will, the news release said.
